Yes, free magic tricks can help you get off to a good start. In fact, many magicians got interested in magic through a magic book or magic set that was given as a gift.

If you did not have the good fortune to be given a box of tricks, the next best thing is to check your local library for magic books. They are usually in the Hobbies section, near to the Sports section. That was how I got started. The tricks I found were so good that I even managed to put on a few magic shows for my family and friends.

Now with the convenience and the power of the internet, you can just search for "free magic tricks" in your favorite search engine and immediately get pages of results. Most of them are simple magic tricks found in kids' magic books but occasionally you can find some really good tricks.

Having said all that however, if you truly aspire to grow as a magician eventually you need to move away from just free tricks and invest in some magic books, DVDs, tricks and props.
